Badlands are ready for some good tourist numbers
Sights in Rapid City weren't the only ones gearing up to kickoff the summer, National Parks were sprucing up as well.  And sure enough, staffers at Badlands National Park say they are seeing an upsurge in the number of visitors coming through the doors at the visitor center, and vehicles coming through the gates.

Crosswalk safety a top priority with RCPD PDF print email

The Rapid City Police Department is ramping up patrols all over the city during National Traffic Safety Month, and Friday morning, officers set their sights on downtown crosswalks. In an effort to protect the city's pedestrians, officers watched downtown crosswalks as an undercover officer attempted to cross the street.

It's been a fixture in the front of the Pirate's Cove Golf Course on LaCrosse Street in Rapid City, but now, it's nowhere to be found. Police say someone stole this 12-foot shark statue, worth about $6,000 from the attraction.

Landfill smoke still lingers around South Rapid PDF print email

Smoke continues to be an issue for residents in South Rapid City. This was the scene at the Rapid City Landfill last Thursday: a fire started in the facility's yard waste area. The fire has since been contained, but it's been smoldering for more than a week now.

Fire crews called out to Beretta Road PDF print email

For the second time in just as many weeks, fire crews are called out to a popular shooting area. Shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, a small fire was reported off of Beretta Road southwest of Rapid City. Crews on scene say they're called out to this area yearly, with the most recent call coming in two weeks ago.

Air Force briefs Oglala Sioux tribe members on Badlands Bombing Range PDF print email

The Air Force Friday briefed members of the Oglala Sioux tribe on the timeframe for the final transfer of the Badlands Bombing Range back to the tribe. Friday, a spokeman for the Air Force, Tim Pavek, delivered a Powerpoint presentation showing how the former bombing and artillery range has been looked over very carefully over the past few years.
