With rodeos scattered across the country all year long, short of the N-F-R, finding every one of the top cowboys and cowgirls in one venue has been a rarity... until now.
The Black Hills Stock Show unveiled that it will be the first stop of this year's Champion's Challenge.
An event where the top cowboys and cowgirls will be split up into teams, competing in their individual events for points in the PRCA standings, but now with the added element of representing more than just themselves.
PRCA rep Sara Muirhead says team sponsors gathered last month in a fantasy draft, of sorts, to select the squads for this year's Challenge.
Muirhead says, 'We did the draft the day after the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo this last year in Las Vegas, and had the pool of contestants. The team sponsors all started out with 10 chips worth $1,000. When the draft was done, they started trading. So Wrangler traded certain contestants for $3,000 in chips. Justin traded another guy for $1,000. So, the team standings are not going to start equally when the season begins here in Rapid City. You'll see some of the teams are starting higher, because they traded some of their guys, and some guys are obviously starting in the hole.'
Seven of the 10 competitors were selected from last year's world rankings and will not change during the year. The other three will be determined by this year's rankings.
The first of eight Champion's Challenge events will kick off Tuesday, February 4th at this year's Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.
