With warmer weather on the way in the coming weeks, area ski slopes are seeing their last guests of the season. The two Northern Hills ski resorts say they saw some serious challenges this season. Black Hills FOX reporter Jaleesa Irizarry has more.
Tom Marsing Terry Peak GM says, "Mother Nature takes care of herself at time and we don't have much say." And Mother Nature certainly kept to herself this winter.Instead of gracing the Black Hills with a snow storm to start off the ski season she left the mountain with its driest winter in four years. Tom Marsing says, "Due to the lack of snow and having to make a lot of snow and getting a little bit of snow here and there instead of getting it all at one time so we can get open we had to work to get everything open this year." The work didn't stop there. The team had to continue to make snow to survive the season. But to much surprise, that didn't stop residents from hitting the slopes. Tom Marsing says, "Our biggest concern throughout all this was we don't get natural snow people have a hard time showing up. But this year we had really good crowds almost every vacation day." While natural snow was a big issue for Terry Peak, but five miles south, Ski Mystic says thing are different. "We get a lot of natural snow, lots of powder." Alicia Salas is the general manager of Ski Mystic and says the ski season started very late but another attraction on the resort had the area busy all season long. Alicia Salas says, "Zero gravity out tubing park is in its second season and we're able to open up right away even before our ski slopes--It has proven to be a really big attraction." Although Ski Mystic is open only Friday through Sunday they say their crowd never dwindled. Alicia Salas says, "We've very much increased with our skiing in the last month and a half. It's been awesome." Despite a season full of challenged both mountains plan on staying open until the end of the month. For Black Hills FOX, I'm Jaleesa Irizarry. |
