It's an issue that lies along the shadows of Rapid City - poverty. Western South Dakota is home to the three poorest counties in the United States. Saturday night, a local group held its largest event to help curb those numbers.

The Cornerstone Rescue Mission had its annual Bird and Bison Banquet to help raise funds and awareness to the issue of homelessness. Over 500 people were in attendance to participate in silent auctions, enjoy a dinner, and hear from guest speaker Anne Jackson.

Jackson tells us why events like this are so important to the community.

Jackson says, "Sometimes we kind of get - we have perfect neighborhoods and everything is going great but there's this darker side and maybe this side no one wants to talk about but by bringing aware people can get involved and bring hope, resources and give up time and it gives people a chance to serve which I think is incredible."

So far the event has raised about $30,000 for the rescue mission's various programs.
