The South Dakota Army National Guard now has a new State Command Sergeant Major.

And, for the first time, that person is a woman. This past weekend, Command Sergeant Major Susan Shoe was sworn in as the new State Command Sergeant Major in ceremonies at the Headquarters Building at Camp Rapid. Sergeant Shoe replaces State Command Sergeant Major Larry Zimmerman. The rank is the highest enlisted rank in the South Dakota Army National Guard.  It was first established in 1975, and had now been held by eight people. In her new role, Shoe will serve as the Assistant Adjutant General's personal advisor on all matters relating to enlisted personnel in the South Dakota National Guard.
