Homeless count in Rapid City
Tuesday, 29 January 2013 11:58
The South Dakota Housing Authority is doing is Statewide Homeless Count and a group got started counting here in Rapid City on Tuesday.

Volunteers are spreading out across Rapid City,  checking shelters,  motels, and on the streets. They say it's important to get an accurate count because if they can show there is a need, they have the possibility of getting more funding for permanent housing here. But organizers say getting an accurate count is a challenging job.

Anita Deranleau says, "It really is because it's a very fluid thing. People can be living in temporary housing for a short period of time or a long period of time. They move from place to place quite often. Of course, the weather affects where they're living. So yes, it's a very challenging thing to get an accurate count."

The homeless count continues tonight and run through noon tomorrow.
