Johnson hopes for support on long-term farm bill

Senator Tim Johnson is calling for support to pass a new long-term farm bill. Johnson is a co-sponsor of recently introduced legislation that is nearly identical to the farm bill the Senate passed last year.

Johnson says House inaction forced Congress to simply pass an extension, but the Democratic senator hopes this legislation will inspire the House to now consider passing a new farm bill.

The senator says as it stands, the bill would reduce the federal deficit by more than $23-billion over 10 years and support many jobs for South Dakota's ag industry. Reforms would also be made to crop insurance programs, and pine beetle funding would be addressed.

Representative Kristi Noem is expected to be in Rapid City on Saturday, discussing farm bill issues during the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.
