COMPASS meetings officially open to the public

After a vote by the Rapid City Council to make all COMPASS meetings and work sessions open to the public, the committee on Monday read into record a rule to do just that. COMPASS is the city's internal audit program put in place to review the actions of city government and evaluate its spending.

Coleen Schmidt says, "It's all a learning process. We're brand new and I think COMPASS has a lot to offer to the community, so I'm hoping that now our work sessions are going to be open that everything will calm down and we can be the professional organization that we had hoped to be."

Schmidt is one of the private citizen members of the committee. She says work sessions are more informal than meetings and sometimes they have to discuss items that could be confidential. But Schmidt says she doesn't mind the open sessions and meetings as long as they have the ability to have portions of the meeting closed to the public when things are more private in nature, and they do have that ability.
