Black Hills Works hosts open house

Black Hills Workshop has been renamed the Black Hills Works Learning Institute, and to help the public understand what's changed besides the name, a special open house was held at the facility.

Tours were given to showcase the revamped facility that serves locals with disabilities, including the art studio, manufacturing center, and the health and fitness center. The cornerstone of the new face of Black Hills Works is a new learning center, in which folks inside and outside the Works community can hold classes to bring in fresh ideas and experiences. It's a concept people here say is in the process of growing.

BHW fitness instructor Joe Burmeister says, "Some of my co-workers have started to come up here and do some classes and eventually, we're in our infancy now, but I think when we reach our zenith, the goal is to have lots of people from the community coming in with outside perspective and outside experiences that they can provide learning opportunities for the folks that we provide services for."

Black Hills Works says they're currently looking for members of the community to volunteer their time to teach courses at the new learning center. Those interested are encouraged to contact Danette Shille  at 343-4550.
