Obama signs off on executive orders for gun control print

Just over a month after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, President Obama has signed off on 23 executive actions aimed at curbing gun violence. Those executive actions are measures the president can order without approval by Congress.

The President's executive actions include measures to encourage schools to hire police officers, increase research on gun violence, and improve efforts to prosecute gun crime. They lay the groundwork for a number of actions the Obama Administration hopes will be approved by Congress, including closing background check loopholes to keep guns out of the wrong hands, banning military assault weapons and high capacity magazines, along with increasing access to mental health services.

However, President Obama says those plans will face a tough road ahead.

Obama says, "This will be difficult. There will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical all-out assault on liberty and behind the scenes, they'll do everything they can to block any common sense reform and make sure nothing changes whatsoever."
