City to seek new bids for dam reconstruction

Rapid City's Public Works Committee has authorized staff to advertise for bids to reconstruct the spillway at Canyon Lake. City staff says the spillway is more than 35 years old and is in need of a makeover.

Public Works Director Terry Wolterstorff says they opened bids last summer, but all the bids were rejected when they were coming in at more than the project's estimated cost of $3.5 million. He says the reconstruction of the spillway is an important project for the community.

Wolterstorff says, "There have been seepage and leak problems on the spillway over the years. There have been several attempts to try to do some repair work and try to stop them. We have discovered there are some voids underneath the spillway. It certainly isn't at a point where we're worried about any catastrophic events happening. Realistically, worse case scenario, it would drain the lake."

Wolterstorff says bids will open at the end of February and if everything goes as planned construction would begin late fall.
