The Seventh Circuit Court is down a judge after the resignation of Judge Mary Thorstenson. Judge Thorstenson is resigning that position to return to the federal system, taking an appointment as a judge in the Department of the Interior's Office of Hearings and Appeals.

She had spent 18 years in the federal government prior to being sworn in as a judge in the Seventh Circuit in December of 2009.

Presiding Judge Jeff Davis says Thorstenson's cases will be divided up among the other judges. He says the Judicial Qualifications Commission will recommend candidates to Governor Dennis Daugaard, who will then appoint her replacement.
