The man who pleaded guilty to shooting at police and highway patrol troopers almost a year ago in Rapid City got hit with a heavy prison sentence Friday. 42-year James Baker of Rapid City pleaded guilty three weeks ago.

As part of a plea agreement, attempted murder charges were dropped, and Friday, Baker was sentenced to a total of 70 years in prison by Judge Jeff Davis for three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and one count of committing a felony with a firearm.

Prosecutors said Baker shot at two Rapid City Police officers and one Highway Patrol trooper after a high speed chase.

Baker apologized to the officers, and said three weeks ago that he was trying to commit suicide by cop, and not kill them.

Baker will have to serve at least half of his 70 years before he's eligible for parole.
