Transportation accidents accounted for the majority of fatal work injuries reported in South Dakota for 2011. The data for that year has just been released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The preliminary report shows 31 fatal work injuries were reported throughout the state, 14 resulting from transportation accidents, which includes aircraft and roadway incidents.

Statewide, fatal occupational injuries have ranged from a high of 46 in 1999 to a low of 22 in 2007. A final, full report on 2011 statistics will be released this spring.
