Police Chief says be careful about guns in school

Rapid City's Chief of Police says the South Dakota Legislature will need input from law enforcement officials if a proposed law is introduced in the upcoming session.   The law, which would encourage school districts in South Dakota to increase security in local schools, is similar to other measures being introduced in other parts of the country following the mass murder of 20 students and six teachers in Connecticut.

Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says he will be in Pierre to add his input when the bill is introduced.  Allender says increasing school security is not simply a matter of giving guns to teachers.  Allender says, "But the more guns you have in a location or a business such as ours, the more potential for those guns to be lost or stolen or accidentally discharged or improperly displayed. There's a number of responsibilities that go along with firearm ownership."   Students at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut returned to school today after being away from classes since the shooting on December 14th.   Students in Rapid City elementary schools returned to classes today as well after Christmas vacation.
