RCFD offers fireworks safety tips

Some in South Dakota will celebrate the New Year's holiday with a bang. South Dakota State law is allowing people to purchase and shoot off fireworks over the holiday for a second year now.

The Rapid City Fire Department reminds everyone, though, that fireworks are prohibited in Rapid City, within one mile of Rapid City limits and in the Black Hills Fire Protection District.

Lt. Brent Long with the fire department says even though it's winter the fire danger is still high. Long says, "Even though the snow, I mean, it has very little moisture in it this real light fluffy stuff. We've got some moisture on the ground if you look at the fuels that are sticking out through the snow they're still just as dry as they were, you know, a couple of months ago."

Long reminds everyone to be safe and aware of your surroundings if your plans include lighting up the sky, and have a fire extinguisher nearby. Fireworks can be sold and shot off starting Friday through January 1st.
