Emergency official urge drivers to slow down

The Rapid City Fire Department is warning motorists to take extra caution when it comes to driving on slick roads. This is video of an accident that took place on Catron Boulevard Christmas Day that sent five people to the hospital.

Lt. Brent Long with the Rapid City Fire Department says they have been assisting on more emergency calls since the snow hit the area. Long says, "We are seeing an increase in the number of accidents this year already, nothing more than we normally see, you know, once the weather starts to turn, a lot of little fender benders here and there, but most of the time it's just the vehicles lose control, they start to slide a little bit and then that's when the accidents happen, so slowing down a little bit, giving yourself a little extra time just to get to where you're going will help out a lot."

Long says it's always good to have a survival kit on hand that would include blankets and snacks. He also says it's a good idea to make sure your cell phone is fully charged and your vehicle is in good operating condition.
