Mountain Lion season opens with pair of kills
Wednesday, 26 December 2012 15:30
Wednesday marked opening day for the Black Hills mountain lion hunting season, and already, hunters have brought down at least two big cats.  The first reported kill was a 78-pound female estimated to be two years old. It was taken in Lawrence County.

And a 111-pound male, also approximately 2 years old, was killed in Pennington County.  Hunters are required to report a lion kill to the Game, Fish and Parks Department within 24 hours of the animal being harvested.  The mountain lion season is scheduled to run through the end of March, but will end sooner if hunters reach the quota of 100 total lions or 70 females.  That quota is up from last year.  The GF&P says that's because of the degradation of the deer and elk populations by mountain lions.
