YFS kids get old-fashioned Christmas gift

It felt a lot like Christmas at the Youth and Family Services Head Start and Boys Health Programs Tuesday morning. It all got going with decorating the Christmas tree. And it got better from there, thanks to the Rapid City Woodcarvers Association.

Twenty-seven people worked on the project this year, with about a dozen working on toys every week starting back in January. And this is their biggest year yet, making about 2,000 toys and giving more than 1,600 away to area kids.

Woodcarvers president Bob Buchanan says, "This is the best part, watching them use them. You can't imagine what they're going to do with them until you see them. It's really great. That's probably why we do it, this kind of stuff right here. That's why we spend all our time and resources doing this."

This is the fifth year that the woodcarvers have made toys for these kids. They made extras this year so they already have a head start on next year.
