State regulators say yes to gold search

One company's plans to explore for gold in the Northern Black Hills have taken a small step forward.  South Dakota regulators have approved a permit for Valentine Mining Company to look for gold in a site that overlooks Spearfish Canyon.

The permit does not allow Valentine Mining to extract gold, but it does allow them to acquire core samples to get a better idea of what sits below the surface.  The South Dakota Department of Natural Resources says they're not likely to make a decision on large-scale mining for at least one year.  If mining is allowed, the Deadwood Standard Project would be the first large-scale gold mine in South Dakota in over 20 years.
