South Dakota first Flu Death print

South Dakota health officials have reported the state's first flu death of the season and say an annual vaccination is the single best way to protect against the flu.

Officials said that the Pennington County resident who died was between the age of 90 and 99. The person had influenza B and was hospitalized. The South Dakota Department of Health has reported 156 laboratory-confirmed flu cases this winter season and 28 flu-related hospitalizations.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Lon Kightlinger says the death is a reminder that the flu can be a very serious illness, particularly for the elderly. Also at higher risk are pregnant women,  people with chronic medical conditions, healthcare workers and children.
