Officials said that the Pennington County resident who died was between the age of 90 and 99. The person had influenza B and was hospitalized. The South Dakota Department of Health has reported 156 laboratory-confirmed flu cases this winter season and 28 flu-related hospitalizations. State Epidemiologist Dr. Lon Kightlinger says the death is a reminder that the flu can be a very serious illness, particularly for the elderly. Also at higher risk are pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, healthcare workers and children. AP |
