It also marked the unveiling of a five-by-eight foot charcoal drawing of the school's late president, Dr. Robert Wharton.  16 students worked on the drawing, with students working on a total of 80 ten inch squares, which were pieced together for the final work.  Deborah Mitchell says, "This usually boisterous classroom where there's all kinds of action and things going on, there was really a different feel to it this time. There's contemplation and reflection and they really wanted to do a good job. They always want to do a good job. For some reason, it just seemed like this was particularly poignant for them. They had a chance, an opportunity to show their love and respect for our president."  If you would like to check out the drawing of Doctor Wharton, it's on display on the third floor of the Classroom Building at the School of Mines.
