Brewer inaugurated as Oglala tribal president |

Inauguration ceremonies for the new president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe took place in Pine Ridge. Black Hills Fox Reporter Al Van Zee has the story. The new president is 65-year-old Bryan V. Brewer.
He may familiar to many high school basketball fans because of his long-time involvement in the Lakota Nations Invitational Tournament. The inauguration ceremonies took place at the Pine Ridge High School gymnasium, where about three hundred people gathered to see the new tribal president take office. Along with crowd that attended, were the traditional chiefs from many of the regions tribes. Along with Brewer, Tribal Vice President Tom Poor Bear was also inaugurated.Brewer said before the ceremony that the tribe faces many challenges. Bryan Brewer says, "A lot of things on my mind; a lot of things we have to get ready for, an orientation to find out exactly where we're at financially. We've identified some problem areas that we have to go after. So there's no time for a learning curve. We'll just have to jump in there and try to identify some issues that are facing people." Brewer defeated long-time incumbent President John Yellow Bird Steele in the November election. Brewer was actually sworn in on Tuesday at the Wounded Knee church on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Brewer says one of his first tasks as President will be to travel to the White House for the Tribal Nations Conference. Friday's inaugural ceremony itself was followed by an inauguration powwow at the Pine Ridge High School gymnasium. Al Van Zee Black Hills Fox News. |
