Construction starts on new bike path

Construction has begun on a trail that will extend from Dinosaur Park to Flormann Street in Rapid City.   The Skyline Trail is anticipated to be the main thoroughfare for the Skyline Wilderness Area.   This section of the trail being built will extend from the east side of Skyline Drive and is supposed to be complete in January.

The Skyline Trail is only one part of a much larger Vision Fund project, though, scheduled to begin in 2013.   The landscape designer for the Parks and Recreation Department says this project will develop an official multi-use trail system that is accessible, safe, fun and sustainable.  Landscape Designer Alex DeSmidt says, "It will provide access to visitors, the community that lives here and it's basically a wilderness park in the middle of Downtown Rapid City.  And it will be open to hikers and bikers, at the same time it will be very similar to Hanson-Larsen and they've kind of set the stage for building a great park facility."  DeSmidt says they have more than $900-thousand dollars to develop the trail system.  He says there is no final completion date set in stone but he expects it to be at least a few years.
