Rosebud Sioux Tribe Buys Land at Auction

There is a new buyer for land west of Deerfield Lake that last month caused so much controversy.  A Hermosa man mistakenly thought he was buying the entire 40 acres for the rock-bottom price of $2550, when in fact the bid price was per acre.

The Pennington County Commission opted to resell the property near Deerfield Lake at a second auction Tuesday.  It worked out well for the taxpayers, as perspective buyers flew in from as far away as California to view the remote land, and the bidding became much more competitive.  Auctioneer Kevin McPherson says, "We're very grateful to have the land sold for $3,600 plus the 10 percent buyer fee. And as we mentioned, the county ends up with $144,000 from the sale of the property."  The winning bid went to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, who called in their bid by telephone.
