Noem says 'No' to seeking a House leadership position

South Dakota Congresswoman Kristi Noem says she won't seek a leadership position in the House this session because she wants to concentrate on issues that affect South Dakotans. Noem made the comments during a telephone press conference with reporters. Noem says one of the challenges faced by the existing Congress, and the new one which will convene next year, is the "fiscal cliff" the country will face if Congress and the President don't reach a budget deal.

Noem says, "If we fail to act before these un-targeted cuts and tax hikes are triggered at the end of the year, we could be facing another recession. There were some recent studies that came out that said, if those tax rates are raised, South Dakota could lose 2200 jobs."

The fiscal cliff resulted from a deal made last year that calls for across-the-board budget cuts and tax increases that some economists say will drive the U.S. economy into another recession.
