The 5th Annual Lakota Dakota Nakota Language Summit is in Rapid City the next few days in an effort to keep those Native languages alive. The summit welcomes tribes from across the United States and Canada that are working to keep their language strong. The summit features teaching and learning methods, strategies, models, resources, and technology to successfully create a new generation of speakers.
Director Michael Carlow says, "Our language is basically our identity. As a people, our language holds a lot of cultural knowledge, you know, we lose our language as a lot of cultural, historical knowledge that we lose with it."
The Lakota Dakota Nakota Language Summit runs through Saturday.
