The South Dakota School of Mines is expanding. Officials cut the ribbon Friday on their remodeled Downtown Campus on Kansas City Street.

The building now houses several new conference areas  as well as the entire Industrial Engineering Department. Once scattered in several buildings across the school's main campus, leadership for the Industrial Engineering Department says their new home at the Downtown Campus will make classroom time and research easier for its expanding number of students.

Industrial Engineering Department Head Dr. Stuart Kellogg says, "We've more than tripled out laboratory space. This was critical for us if we were going to grow and go out and bring in the curriculum innovation grants through the STEM education arm of the National Science foundation."

Dr. Kellogg says there are currently about 150 students operating out of the department and the new building.
