Friends and family are looking to honor the life of the late Native American advocate Russell Means. Means died Monday at the age of 72 after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. Means first captured national attention in 1973 when he helped to lead the American Indian Movement in its 71-day armed takeover of Wounded Knee.

A special remembrance ceremony is being held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Little Wound High School in Kyle on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Friends say ceremonies are also being planned for next year at the 40th anniversary of the Wounded Knee occupation in February, a June celebration at Wind Cave and a special ceremony next November to honor Means' birthday.
