United Blood Services says nearly one quarter of all blood donated in our area during the school year comes from students.

That's why in conjunction with the 'Beyond the Books' program held a blood drive at Stevens High School. Coordinators say their goal was to collect at least 100 units of blood during the drive. One Stevens teacher says high school blood drives are a great way to encourage students to give back to their community.

Lori Storm says, "This helps teach them maturity. It shows that teenagers are very civic minded. They are wiling to volunteer and help others. A lot of students are really about helping others and this is a way for them to do that."

More than 130 Stevens students were scheduled to donate today.
