He's survived 60 years of children, weather and even the devastating Rapid City flood of 1972.

Now one of Storybook Island's most beloved icons is returning home, thanks to the efforts of School of Mines civil engineering students. The American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter has taken on the task of refurbishing Willy, the whale, who had fallen into disrepair. Concrete was mixed and poured today, then hand-shaped around the outside of the frame. Students say, the project offers a great opportunity to get out of the classroom and contribute to the community. The new Willy will be slightly larger than his predecessor, measuring 24-feet long and 6-feet tall.
