Defendant heads to hospital after violent outburst

It started out as a sentencing Friday morning in Seventh Circuit Court. It ended up with the defendant, 20-year old John Shaw of Box Elder, being taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Judge Janine Kern sentenced Shaw to 50 years in prison after he earlier pleaded guilty to discharge of a firearm at a moving vehicle and three counts of aggravated assault for shooting into a car near Reptile Gardens in February. It was after the sentencing that things got wild.

After court was adjourned, Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom says Shaw wrestled with deputies on his way out of the courtroom and broke the glass out of a courtroom door with his elbow. Shaw was taken to the hospital to be treated for those cuts, and Thom says he would then be returning to jail.

In giving Shaw the long sentence, Judge Kern cited Shaw's meth use, his long and serious criminal history, and said his behavior has become a threat to himself and the community. He could face additional charges after Friday's incident.
