DEA holding Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
Friday, 28 September 2012 12:10
Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The Drug Enforcement Administration started the program back in 2010 for people to safely get rid of their unused prescription medicine. There will be a drop off box available in the lobby of the Rapid City Public Safety Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Police say there's a big advantage to bringing your medicine in rather than throwing it in the garbage.

RCPD Forensic Lab Director Richard Bleil says, "The problem with the garbage is that frequently it can still be retrieved by people who should not be having them, children are sort of the main things between the ages of 12 and 18. So by giving it to us we ensure that it's safely removed from the streets and won't cause anybody any harm by taking them."

He says illegally used prescription drugs are the second most frequently used drug on the streets behind marijuana.
