Enrollment at SD public universities has leveled off

The executive director of the South Dakota Board of Regents calls it a 'level enrollment situation' across the state's six public higher learning institutions.  The Board of Regents announced the Fall 2012 enrollment numbers Tuesday afternoon, saying statewide totals have leveled off in recent years.

The head count of students is 36,430 up 327, or about 1 percent, from the previous year.  The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology says they've seen about a 5 percent increase in enrollment since the fall of 2011.  Black Hills State University says their enrollment has dropped by eight students, but totals are still about 9 percent higher from five years ago.  BHSU president Dr. Kay Shallenkamp says she's happy with the numbers, noting that many potential South Dakota college students are being lured away by jobs in the North Dakota oil fields.
