The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is mourning the loss of its president, Dr. Robert Wharton. Wharton served as president since 2008 , with what administrators say was a clear vision forward for the school. The announcement came as school leaders learned Wharton had died from complications following cancer treatment. Wharton was diagnosed with neck cancer late last year and announced he was cancer free in April.

Provost Duane Hrncir, who's now serving as interim president, says Wharton will be deeply missed.Hrncir says, "President Wharton was truly a leader, he had a vision for the institution, he built consensus among the faculty and staff, the students, the community, donors and alumni. He was really good at building a consensus and a coherent group."

Officials say M-Week celebrations will be postponed until October 11th through the 13th.Final arrangements for Wharton are pending.
