Judge affirms Rhines conviction and sentence

Seventh Circuit Judge Thomas Trimble has affirmed the murder conviction and death sentence of Charles Russell Rhines. A Pennington County jury convicted Rhines in 1993 of the 1992 murder of Donnivan Schaeffer in a Rapid City donut shop. Rhines was back in Trimble's courtroom in July, looking to have his conviction tossed out, challenging the conduct of the prosecution during the trial, the method of execution and the failure of his own attorneys.

In a statement, South Dakota attorney general Marty Jackley said the court's ruling is an important step in holding Rhines accountable for his horrific action.
