The drought of 2012 is getting worse in some of the key farm states that produce most of the nation's corn.   The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor shows that more than two-thirds of Iowa, the nation's top corn producer, is seeing extreme or exceptional drought conditions.

Nearly all of Nebraska is experiencing extreme or exceptional drought. In South Dakota, the worst-hit areas are in the western and southern parts of the state, with the prairies south of the Black Hills being in the worst condition. Many ranchers are being forced to haul water to livestock where stock dams have dried up.Hay prices have skyrocketed, with alfalfa selling for up to $200 dollars a ton in some places.Climatologists are calling this the worst drought since the Dust Bowl days of the 1930s.
