Rapid City Police say they arrested a 23–year old man Thursday afternoon for the death of a 2–year old girl. Police say they were called to the 3000 block of West Omaha Wednesday night where they found an unresponsive toddler. She was airlifted to Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls, where she died Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say that, due to the severity of her injuries, an investigation was opened Wednesday night. Police arrested Edward Berges of Rapid City on Thursday and charged him with second degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

Police say Berges is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

Second degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
