Young rider finds early success on two wheels

The Sturgis rally brings folks from all over the country to the Jackpine Gypsy dirt track as they compete for top honors in various age groups and engine sizes.

These competitors have traveled hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to get here, but you don't have to look far for the kid winning all of the races. Dawson Schieffer is a native of Sturgis and he is this week's athlete of the week. Dawson credits his introduction to motorcycle racing to his parents who got him started when he was just five.

Dawson is only eleven years old so naturally you wouldn't expect him to have accomplished much, after all, he's just a kid. You would never guess that this unassuming preteen is already a six time national champion. Motorcycle racing is a dangerous sport. And a while back Dawson took his first real spill on the track. It's always frightening to get back on the back after a big accident, but Dawson didn't give it a second thought.Dawson says that someday he hopes to take something that started out as a hobby and turn it into a very successful career.
