Noem pushing for Farm Bill's passage
Thursday, 02 August 2012 12:21
Twenty-five counties in South Dakota have been declared disaster areas after Mother Nature sucked the moisture right out of the ground. Republican Rep. Kristi Noem says she's fighting to get livestock disaster program legislation passed immediately.

Noem says that type of legislation was in the 2008 Farm Bill but didn't extend through the full length of the bill, meaning South Dakota livestock producers are not covered for this year's drought.

Noem says, "It's certainly frustrating that we haven't been able to cobble together a bi-partisan coalition that the Farm Bill has traditionally attracted, and make no mistake passing livestock disaster is a good fist step. But I'm not giving up on a Farm Bill. I'm going to continue fighting to get this done this year."

The Livestock Disaster Program did pass the House on Thursday. Noem says she still hopes to get a new Farm Bill passed before the week's end.
