It's a large-scale production that involves more than 50 people, and it's written by a Black Hills writer-director who says she loves the challenge of a job of this size.

At the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Flutter Productions and the Suzie Cappa Arts Center presented two performances of the original stage production called "Quintessence." The performers ranged in age from 6 years old to 87.

And the director says it demonstrates that all people are capable of creating beauty in the world. Heather Pickering says, "The title of the show is called Quintessence. And it's all about the illusive fifth element beyond earth, wind, water and fire. And many people believed in the Middle Ages that that was the element that created the starts of the human soul, or heavenly bodies. It was quintessence." Assisting with funding for the production was the South Dakota Art Council and the Black Hills Workshop Foundation. Proceeds from the two productions will go to the Black Hills Workshop.
