Area fire departments are on the go after thunderstorms Friday evening brought more lightning to Western South Dakota and sparked several new fires. An official with the Rapid City Fire Department said Rapid City crews responded to at least three fires just between about 7 and 8 p.m. Great Plains Fire Dispatch says volunteer departments, as well as federal and state agencies, also responded to multiple fire and smoke reports. Earlier Friday residents of about 40 homes were ordered to evacuate due to a series of wildfires, called the Long Horn Complex, on the Rosebud Reservation. Fire information officers said Friday night that each of those five fires is 200 to 300 acres in size and a Type 2 Incident Command Team is en route. -Julie Oberlander |
