Thune hopeful for Farm Bill's passage in House

The number of counties in South Dakota that have been designated as suffering from severe drought has increased from 12 to 36 in a matter of weeks. Now South Dakota's Republican senator is hoping the federal government can alleviate some of the damage done by Mother Nature.

Sen. John Thune says he hopes Congress can pass a new Farm Bill which includes programs that could provide relief to farmers and ranchers in South Dakota. He's also hoping to open Conservation Reserve Program acres for haying.

Thune says, "It's a bad situation. Obviously we have to make the best of what is a bad situation, make sure that the federal programs that are available are tailored to the needs of producers this year and as I mentioned, I think with respect to live producers."

The Farm Bill has passed the Senate and has received approval from the House Ag Committee, but has yet to be voted on by the full House.
