Cactus Fire burns hundreds of acres on prairie

Another big fire burned Thursday on the prairie east of the Black Hills. Fire officials say the Cactus Fire started around noon about three miles east of Cactus Flat near Exit 127 on Interstate 90. By 3 p.m. Thursday, officials say the fire had scorched an estimated 1,500 acres and was threatening structures.

Fire crews from federal, state, local and volunteer agencies all responded to the scene. A helicopter was fighting the blaze from the air. The cause of that fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, two wildfires that were sparked by lightning Tuesday entered the mop-up stage Thursday. As of Thursday morning, the Switch Back Draw Fire in Custer State Park had burned an estimated 57 acres. The closure of the French Creek Natural Area was expected to be lifted at 8 p.m.

As of noon Thursday, the River Bend Fire south of Edgemont was at 86 acres and 90 percent containment.
