Johnson asks for drought help
Thursday, 12 July 2012 11:55
Sen. Tim Johnson is asking Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to open Conservation Reserve Program acres to emergency haying and grazing due to ongoing and worsening drought conditions.

In a letter, Johnson says he supports the request that the South Dakota Farm Service Agency made to USDA on Wednesday seeking flexibility in opening CRP acres. The South Dakota Democrat says that much of the CRP land which would be available for haying is in eastern South Dakota and is currently enrolled under wetland and farmable wetland practices. Johnson adds that opening CRP acres to haying in non-eligible counties would help ranchers in other eligible counties access feed for their livestock, where it is in much more limited quantities.
