Reptile Garden’s oldest will get a permanent memorial in his honor

Once the oldest living resident in the Black Hills, Reptile Garden's giant tortoise, Methuselah, will soon be getting a permanent memorial at his former home. Methuselah passed away last July at 130 years old. Reptile Gardens will host a ceremony Tuesday to unveil a life-sized bronze statue of the Galapagos tortoise.

To help remember the gentle-giant, the park will serve watermelon at the ceremony, Methuselah's favorite food.

Reptile Gardens spokesperson John Brockelsby says, "Watermelon is definitely a special thing at Reptile Gardens. For his birthday, I always bought two watermelons for Methuselah because it was his favorite food. I think Tuesday; I'll probably cut a little watermelon and feed our other two giant tortoises, because they like it also."

The unveiling is slated for 10:30 Tuesday morning, but festivities will last through 2 in the afternoon.
