Fireworks-related calls down from 2011

The Fourth of July wasn't as bright as usual on Wednesday due to the fireworks and burn bans in and around Rapid City. The Rapid City Fire Department says they are thankful to the local residents for their support of the bans.

The Police Department says officers responded to 126 fireworks-related calls Wednesday, which is down slightly from last year.

The fire department says crews responded to six fireworks-related grass fires. Fire officials say the incidents in and around Rapid City were few, which helped crews get to them quicker.

Lt. Brent Long with the Rapid City Fire Department says, "It was real important for us this year, you know, we have kind of a large response area for us here. The conditions right now are so dry and when you have a potential fire that starts in multiple places in the city, you know, it's just going to tax our systems. So we were able to get on the grass fires that happened yesterday quickly because we didn't have six or seven or eight of these going off all at the same time."

Lt. Long says he wants to remind the public that the burn ban will remain in place when conditions are in the very high or extreme categories.
