A competition for the most units of blood has paid off once again for United Blood Services. The 7th annual Guns 'n Hoses Blood Drive that took place last week collected 862 units of blood over a four-day period.

The blood drive also serves as a friendly competition between the Rapid City Fire and Police departments to see who can get the most blood donations. This was a tie-breaker year and the fire department eked out a win with a total of 433 units to the police department's 429.

Lt. Brent Long with the Rapid City Fire Department says, "We're just really into being humble right now, you know, we don't want to bring a lot of attention to ourselves. This is really more about the community and about being good for our area, you know ... just a minute. We don't want to brag or anything, we don't want to rub it in the policemen's face that, oh again we've got the broom and the trophy."

UBS says the police department has already contacted them and wants a re-count. The blood bank says this is their biggest event of the year and it's very important to have a steady supply of blood on hand for any kind of emergency.
