KYLE, S.D. (AP) _ More than 30 people are participating in a weeklong archery camp on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to learn about the historical significance of the bow in Lakota culture.
The Oglala Lakota College is hosting the camp. It concludes on Friday. The Lakota people historically used the bow and arrow to hunt for animals, eating the meat and using the hides for clothing and shelter. Students from kindergarten through college, teachers and adult community parents are taking part in the camp. The participants learn how to make a bow and the science and mathematics behind shooting one. Helene Gaddie, one of the camp organizers, says the experience has been empowering for the students and adults. AP-WF-06-15-12 1740GMT< |
